BOSTON BUILDING ENERGY REPORTING AND DISCLOSURE ORDINANCE
Boston’s medium and large buildings are required to report their annual energy and water use. The Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) further requires buildings to complete a major energy savings action, emissions reduction action, or energy assessment every five years.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
- Buildings covered include: Non-residential buildings that are 35,000 square feet or larger; Residential buildings that are 35,000 square feet or larger, or have 35 or more units; Any parcel with multiple buildings that sum to 100,000 square feet or 100 units.
- To complete a report, covered buildings must show, over the five-year time period, either an improvement of their Energy Star rating by at least 15 points or a reduction by 15 percent or more of the building’s annual energy usage, energy use intensity, annual greenhouse gas emissions, or greenhouse gas intensity.
- Changes to the electric grid and resulting changes in greenhouse gas emissions or intensity do not count toward a building’s required improvement.
- BERDO requires the City to make the reported data public.
